Magnetic tape cassette having an improved window design
A magnetic cassette having an improved window design resulting from a molding operation. In the method, step portions for supporting at least part of a peripheral edge of a window portion in a direction of thickness of the cassette are formed respectively on a cassette half body and the window portion, and the cassette half body and the window portion are molded integrally with each other by multi-color molding. The primary molding is carried out in such a manner that an inclined portion is formed on an edge of the step portion of the primary resin defining part of a mold cavity for injection-molding a secondary resin and subsequently the secondary resin is injection-molded into the mold cavity, thereby integrally molding the cassette half. In the resulting cassette, the cassette half body and a window portion have respective step portions for supporting at least part of a peripheral edge of the window portion in a direction of a thickness of the cassette, and the cassette half body and the window portion are molded integrally with each other by multi-color molding. An inclined portion is formed on an edge of the step portion of the primary resin.

Receiver window design for multicarrier communication systems
Multicarrier modulation formats have been chosen for some wireline and wireless communication systems. These systems use the Fourier transform to convert a convolutive channel into multiple memoryless subchannels, which allows for simple equalization at the receiver. However, because the received signal is windowed in time, noise is spread between subchannels. As a result, narrowband interference sources can degrade the performance over a large number of subchannels. Receiver windowing has been proposed as a computationally efficient technique for reducing noise spreading in multicarrier communication systems. We propose a receiver window design algorithm which minimizes the noise power of the demodulated multicarrier signal. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the windows on a variety of different channels and noise sources.

Optimum window design by semi-infinite quadratic programming
This letter presents a new extended active set strategy for optimum finite impulse response (FIR) window design by semi-infinite quadratic programming. The windows may be asymmetric corresponding to frequency responses with general nonlinear phase. The optimality criterion is to minimize the sidelobe energy (L/sub 2/-norm) subject to a peak sidelobe magnitude-constraint (L/sub /spl infin//-constraint). Additional linear constraints are used to form the mainlobe (unity DC gain). Numerical examples involving group delay specifications are used to illustrate the usefulness of the algorithm.

Window Design of Naturally Ventilated Offices in the Mediterranean Climate in Terms of CO2 and Thermal Comfort Performance
Natural ventilation through window openings is an inexpensive and effective solution to bring fresh air into internal spaces and improve indoor environmental conditions. This study attempts to address the “indoor air quality–thermal comfort” dilemma of naturally ventilated office buildings in the Mediterranean climate through the effective use of early window design. An experimental method of computational modelling and simulation was applied. The assessments of indoor carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and adaptive thermal comfort were performed using the British/European standard BS EN 15251:2007. The results indicate that when windows were opened, the first-floor zones were subjected to the highest CO2 levels, especially the north-facing window in the winter and the south-facing window in the summer. For a fully glazed wall, a 10% window opening could provide all the office hours inside category I of CO2 concentration. Such an achievement requires full and quarter window openings in the cases of 10% and 25% window-to-floor ratios (WFR), respectively. The findings of the European adaptive comfort showed that less than 50% of office hours appeared in category III with cross-ventilation. The concluding remarks and recommendations are presented.

Window annual energy rating systems: What they tell us about residential window design and selection
Residential window annual energy rating systems have been developed in Canada and the US. These systems combine window properties of solar heat gain coefficient, U-factor, and air-infiltration into a single number representative of the energy performance for each of the heating season and the cooling season. These systems provide a simple means for designers to select the best energy performing window for low-rise residential buildings over the heating and cooling seasons. The two systems, which rank windows in the same order, give different information on optimum window design and selection than just a simple U-factor comparison. These systems show the importance of a high window SHGC in cold climates and a low SHGC in hot climates. The impact of window air infiltration is surprisingly small relative to the solar heat gain and heat conduction losses.

Parametric Model for Window Design Based on Prospect-Refuge Measurement in Residential Environment
As the concept of prospect-refuge defines a preferred environment, the spatial elements that provide good conditions for the catalyst of the theory have been extensively studied. The well-known architectural element of this theory is the window that optimizes visual openness to outdoor or enclosure from outdoor. The aim of this paper is to develop a design method for prospect-refuge condition by adjusting window design attributes. A parametric design model that measures spatial conditions and presents design alternatives for the window is proposed in two major phases. First, this paper explains a parametric model to generate design alternatives for a window according to its size, aspect ratio, location, and shape. In the second phase, the parametric algorithm is defined for the measurement of prospect-refuge with 3D visibility. As a result, we explore the impact of window design variables on average visibility and difference visibility of prospect and refuge area. Using the parametric design technology, the proposed method presents analytical techniques, considering spatial characteristics.

Window Design for a Small Particle Solar Receiver
Central receivers for solar power towers have recently been under intense investigation. They can convert solar radiation into electricity by supplying heat to a standard thermodynamic cycle, commonly the Rankine (steam) cycle for commercial operation. Air-cooled solar central receivers, however, can power gas turbine engines for electrical generation in future applications. A new type of receiver module under consideration consists of an insulated pressure vessel, closed by a single or multiple large quartz glass windows and a small particle/air suspension as a working medium. A critical part of the whole assembly is the window which transmits concentrated solar flux into the receiver. The objective of our study is to analyze which windows, and procedures support safe and efficient operation of future plants with this technology. The main focus of this project is to analyze different materials obtainable from the market, and optimize the window design of one large window to cover the aperture and also for the receiver with multiple windows. A part of this work is carried out by using Finite Element Analysis of quartz glass windows of different shapes using the commercial software Hypermesh and Solidworks. The analysis will be performed taking in to account the load and boundary conditions for the window design. The operating conditions for the receiver will provide a uniform 5 bar pressure distribution on the window. The high pressure makes receiver and window design difficult. In addition to the window design, an appropriate manufacturing procedure for the window has been suggested. This paper presents the design of the quartz window for a prototype small particle receiver. Nomenclature Ts = solar transmittance at normal incidence Iλ

A cost minimization approach for optimal window design in spectral analysis of sampled signals
The problem of digital window design is formulated in terms of cost minimization. This cost quantizes the leakage from one frequency to another. The choice of the penalty function appearing in the cost expression may be adapted to a specific spectral analysis problem and allows the designer to control undesirable leakages. The approach is applied in one particular optimization problem: the minimization of the second-order moment extension to the case of sampled signal spectra. This example leads to a correct justification of the Papoulis (1977) window in the case of digital signals. Applications show examples of window design and the interest in the Papoulis window in some problems of spectral parameters estimation: Pisarenko (1973) frequency estimation and autoregressive modelization. >

Army hypersonic compact kinetic-energy missile laser window design
The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, Aviation and Missile Research, Engineering, and Development Center (AMRDEC) is currently developing the Compact Kinetic Energy Missile (CKEM) which achieves hypersonic velocities at sea level. The system incorporates guidance to the target and requires active guidance technology. CKEM's kinetic energy warhead requires an accurate guidance sub-system in order to achieve high probability of kills at long range. Due to the severity of the aerothermal environments, minimized reaction time for small time to target conditions, and the communication degrading effects of the missile's energetic boost motor, a state of the art guidance technique is being developed by the AMRDEC Missile Guidance Directorate called Side-Scatter Laser Beam Rider. This technology incorporates a 1.06 micron laser to receive an off-axis laser guidance link to communicate guidance information from the launch site to the missile. This concept requires the use of optical windows on board the missile for the missile-borne laser energy signal receivers. The current concept utilizes four rectangular windows at 90° increments around the missile. The peak velocity during flight can reach approximately 6300 ft/sec inducing severe aerothermal heating and highly transient thermal gradients. The Propulsion and Structures Directorate was tasked to design and experimentally validate the laser window. Additionally, flight tests were conducted to demonstrate the laser guidance technology. This paper will present the laser window design development process as well as aerothermal testing to induce flight like environments and assess worst case thermostructural conditions.

Beam dump window design for the Spallation Neutron Source
The Spallation Neutron Source accelerator systems will provide a 1 GeV, 1.44 MW proton beam to a liquid mercury target for neutron production. Beam tuning dumps are provided at the end of the linac (the Linac Dump) and in the Ring-to-Target transport line (the Extraction Dump). Thin windows are required to separate the accelerator vacuum from the poor vacuum upstream of the beam dump. There are several challenging engineering issues that have been addressed in the window design. Namely, handling of the high local power density deposited by the stripped electrons from the H-beam accelerated in the linac, and the need for low-exposure removal and replacement of an activated window. The thermal design of the linac dump window is presented, as is the design of a vacuum clamp and mechanism that allows remote removal and replacement of the window.
