| Characteristics and Motivations of Docents in Wildlife Education | Because childhood experiences with pets and wildlife help develop positive attitudes toward animals, educators who can teach the importance of protective maintenance of wildlife and environment to coming generations are needed. The characteristics and motives of 55 volunteer docents in wildlife education (9 men, 46 women) were assessed through telephone interviews. The data indicate that such actively involved docents had great concern for wildlife, had experienced positive role models, peer support, and rewards for specific behaviors involving animals, and had positive experiences with owning pets during childhood. Notably, however, these trained educators focused on teaching more about animal care and protection and less on specific interactions with animals, and they stayed in wildlife education because they liked raising children's enthusiasm for protecting the environment and wildlife. Recruitment of docents for wildlife education should take these latter distinctive characteristics into account. Over-all, the data suggest that children, adolescents, wildlife, and environment could benefit greatly if these docents could extend their suburban outreach programs to inner city primary and intermediate schools as well. | Psychology, Environmental Science | 1997 | 16
| Conserving orangutans one classroom at a time: evaluating the effectiveness of a wildlife education program for school‐aged children in Indonesia | Environmental education is a cornerstone of many wildlife conservation programs, and measuring the impact of such education initiatives is imperative for evaluating their effectiveness in achieving conservation goals. For over 15 years, the Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program (GPOCP) has been working to protect wild Bornean orangutans Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii living in and around Gunung Palung National Park in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. In 2015, we carried out a series of six Environmental Education Expeditions to communities in the remote districts surrounding the Park, engaging 1519 elementary (n = 770) and junior/senior high school (n = 749) students across 24 schools. Before and after engaging with our environmental education activities students were given surveys to assess their knowledge about and attitudes toward orangutans. We found that our educational activities led to 13.6–40.4% increases in student knowledge about orangutans and substantial shifts toward more positive attitudes about conservation, but that many students do not believe that they personally can make a difference. Empowerment may be a key need to link wildlife education to environmental action. | Education, Geography | 2019 | 9
| Promoting wildlife education through exhibits | This study measured the educational value of exhibitry as a method of transferring wildlife information to high school students. Two schools with similar student body profiles were selected and randomly assigned control and experimental group statuses. Pretests measured students' identification and natural history knowledge of 16 mammals. Eight animals were exhibited as a consequence of having low-knowledge scores among students. ANOVA comparisons were conducted among three groups: control (N = 203), experimental viewers (N = 172), and experimental nonviewers (N = 96) of the exhibit. Test results indicated that the passive exhibitry technique produced significant increases in the wildlife knowledge of students who viewed the exhibit. However, no significant change was detected in the test scores of the control group and those experimental students who did not view the exhibit. Several recommendations are provided on classroom teacher opportunities to promote wildlife education through in-school exhibits developed in cooperation with wildlife-related agencies. | Education, Psychology | 1989 | 5
| AN EVALUATION OF THE CONSERVATION EDUCATION PROGRAMMES OF THE UGANDA WILDLIFE EDUCATION CENTRE | Uganda’s rich biodiversity is under threat due to poaching, the destruction of habitats, poaching and the illegal trade in wild animals, amongst others. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Conservation Education programmes of the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) in increasing the learners’ knowledge, attitudes and values about wildlife and wild places. A mixed-methods approach was followed in this research. The research instruments that were used in the quantitative part of this study were group-administered questionnaires. The population was school groups attending the structured non-formal programmes offered at the zoo. The qualitative research involved making use of individual interviews. The best practices and/or weaknesses in the Conservation Education programmes at this zoo were evaluated by means of the Kellogg’s Logic Model. The findings of this study indicated that the Conservation Education programmes were effective in increasing the learners’ knowledge about wildlife and wild places. There was no significant improvement in the increase in attitudes and values of secondary school learners with regard to the consumption of bush-meat and the destruction of habitats. However, there are indications that the outcomes of the Conservation Education programmes are achieved through changes that are evident in the communities. | Education, Environmental Science, Geography | 2015 | 1

The aims of this research are to get information about the diversity of butterfly, dominance, and the similarity community index in PWEC. This research using survey method, that is by catching every butterfly using the net. This research was conducted at two tracks, that is track X, that the distance is 200 meters on the right side of PWEC and Y track that the distance is 200 meters on the left side of PWEC. The next step is identifying the species of butterfly by looking the color of their wings. The result of this research show that the diversity index of butterfly in track X is 2.17 and track Y is 2.81, so its classified as moderate. Dominance index in track X is 0.19 and track Y is 0.07 that means this community is stable and there are no species that dominated. The similarity community index is 6.7% and classified as low. | Engineering, Environmental Science | 2017 | 1
| Understanding the integration process of captive chimpanzees Pan troglodytes in the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre | Over a period of 30 years between 1967 and 1997, the population of wild chimpanzees Pan troglodytes in their natural habitats of tropical Africa has declined from 600 000 to less than 200 000 and is still declining thus raising global concern and a great need for their ex situ conservation. In the wild, chimpanzees live in communities and this is mimicked in captivity. For ex situ conservation of wild chimpanzees to be effective, efforts should be made to ensure acceptance of newly introduced individuals by those chimpanzees already living in zoo communities. This study was first conducted at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) from October 2004 to March 2005 and additional information was gathered between September 2006 and January 2007 in order to understand their integration process. Five chimpanzees were observed and data were collected concerning their feeding habits, behavior, weight changes and health status. Direct observations, recorded information and participatory discussions with veterinary doctors and UWEC managers provided additional information about captive chimpanzees. From our findings, wild chimpanzees had more diseases than captive ones which in turn affected their feeding, social behavior and activity levels. Our results also show that understanding the integration process of captive chimpanzees is essential for both ex situ and in situ conservation because captive chimpanzees though given much attention, they still reflect some behavior of the wild nones. | Biology, Environmental Science, Geography | 2007 | 1
| Wildlife education in higher education institutions, its importance and encountered problems | As an historical process, wildlife educations in higher learning institutions have some differences in Turkey compared to those of the developed western countries. Especially, opening of the wildlife programs and departments has not received the necessary attention until recent years in Turkey. Wildlife education is given as associate degree, undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Universities of Turkey. The number of associate degree programmes, named as “Hunting and Wildlife”, is increasing day by day within various universities. Departments of Wildlife Ecology and Management are mostly located within the forestry faculties. Only in Usak University, "Department of Wildlife Ecology and Management" is placed in the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. In this review, the importance of wildlife education, its historical process in both Turkey and especially in developed western countries, its contribution to the economy, job opportunities, encountered problems and solutions were discussed. 8 | Creating a successful wildlife education program for public schools | There are many ways to organize and execute a wildlife education program. While there are numerous resources for wildlife rehabilitators on public education, there are few that include school-aged children. A successful approach to wildlife education in the public school classroom takes into consideration developmental characteristics for preschool through high school students, teaching styles, and matches programs with state standards. English language learners and students of schools in lower income areas require special considerations. | 2022 | 0
| Efficiency of the vertical axis wind turbine pump a case studies: Bung Boraphet nature and wildlife education center at the Bung Boraphet waterfowls park in Nakhon Sawan Province | The purpose of this research is to study the efficiency of the vertical axis wind turbine pumping system.
