Increased interoperability between web-based applications and hardware functions
The invention is directed to increasing interoperability between web-based applications and hardware functions of a mobile device. The invention includes a thick-client hardware compatibility wrapper (HCW), which renders web-based applications and manages communication between hardware functionality and the web-based application. Specifically, the HCW monitors the web-based application and identifies commands to the hardware components of the mobile device. These commands are interpreted by the HCW, which then uses native calls to perform the hardware-specific activities. The HCW is also capable of calling functions on a webpage within the web-based application in response to query commands to the web-based application or in response to hardware events from the hardware components.

System and method for adding functionality to web-based applications having no extensibility features
Disclosed are systems and methods of extending user interface web pages of a web-based application with user interface elements of a second web-based application. A client receiving a web page from a first server may detect that web page as including user interface of a first web-based application. The client may analyze that web page to extract data and send that data to a second server. The client may receive an indication of one or more modifications to make to the web page from the second server so as to display user interface of a second web-based application. The web page may be modified according to the indication, and the modified web page rendered in the client browser so as to yield a screen display with user interface elements of both the first and second web-based applications. Embodiments may employ a web browser plug-in.

Method and apparatus for detecting session hijacking in web-based applications
One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for detecting session hijacking of web-based applications. During operation, the system receives a request from a client at a server, wherein the request comprises a session cookie associated with a session and the client. Next, the system analyzes the session cookie to retrieve an order identifier for the session cookie. Note that the order identifier is generated when the session cookie is submitted to the server. The system then compares the order identifier from the session cookie with order identifiers for previously received session cookies for the session to determine if the session cookie was submitted after all of the previously received session cookies. If so, the system fulfills the request, generates a new session cookie with a new order identifier, and sends the new session cookie to the client. However, if the session cookie was not submitted after all of the previously received session cookies, the system indicates that the session has been hijacked, and terminates the session.

An Object Oriented Approach to Web-Based Applications Design
In this paper we discuss the use of an object-oriented approach for web-based applications design, based on a method named Object-Oriented Hypermedia Design Method (OOHDM). We first motivate our work discussing the problems encountered while designing large scale, dynamic web-based applications, which combine complex navigation patterns with sophisticated computational behavior. We argue that a method providing systematic guidance to design is needed. Next, we introduce OOHDM, describing its main activities, namely: conceptual design, navigational design, abstract interface design and implementation, and discuss how OOHDM designs can be implemented in the WWW. Finally, related work and future research in this area are further discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Session Fixation Vulnerability in Web-based Applications
Many web-based applications employ some kind of session management to create a user-friendly environment. Sessions are stored on server and associated with respective users by session identifiers (IDs). Naturally, session IDs present an attractive target for attackers, who, by obtaining them, effectively hijack users’ identities. Knowing that, web servers are employing techniques for protecting session IDs from three classes of attacks: interception, prediction and brute-force attacks. This paper reveals a fourth class of attacks against session IDs: session fixation attacks. In a session fixation attack, the attacker fixes the user’s session ID before the user even logs into the target server, thereby eliminating the need to obtain the user’s session ID afterwards. There are many ways for the attacker to perform a session fixation attack, depending on the session ID transport mechanism (URL arguments, hidden form fields, cookies) and the vulnerabilities available in the target system or its immediate environment. The paper provides detailed information about exploiting vulnerable systems as well as recommendations for protecting them against session fixation attacks.

Modeling and Testing Web-based Applications
The Internet is quietly becoming the body of the business world, with web applications as the brains. This means that software faults in web applications have potentially disastrous consequences. Most work on web applications has been on making them more powerful, but relatively little has been done to ensure their quality. Important quality attributes for web applications include reliability, availability, interoperability and security. Web applications share some characteristics of client-server, distributed, and traditional programs, however there are a number of novel aspects of web applications. These include the fact that web applications are “dynamic”, due to factors such as the frequent changes of the application requirement as well as dramatic changes of the web technologies, the fact that the roles of the clients and servers change dynamically, the heterogeneity of the hardware and software components, the extremely loose coupling and dynamic integration, and the ability of the user to directly affect the control of execution. In this paper, we first analyze the distinct features of web-based applications, and then define a generic analysis model that characterizes the typical behaviors of web-based applications independently of different technologies. Based on this analysis, a family of testing techniques is discussed to ensure different level of quality control of web applications under various situations.

User's Perspectives on Privacy in Web-Based Applications
Privacy is a major concern in web-based applications. While privacy was a sensitive issue long before the advent of computers, the phenomenal growth in Internet commerce in recent years has brought privacy concerns to the fore. The problem of privacy has been further exacerbated by the fact that the Web makes it easy for new data to be automatically collected and analyzed by sophisticated data mining tools and personalized marketing services. This study explores the nature of the privacy concern in detail, especially for the online environment. The objective of this study is to get a better understanding of the factors that can affect online privacy concerns and how these concerns could affect the users' behavior and the future of the Internet and electronic commerce.

A multi-agent software engineering environment for testing Web-based applications
This paper presents an agent-based software environment for testing Web-based applications. The infrastructure of the system consists of a light weight agent platform that supports agent communication, an ontology of software testing that enables flexible integration of multiple agents, and a formalism using XML to represent both the basic and compound concepts of the ontology. Relations between testing concepts are defined and their properties are analysed. A number of agents are implemented to perform various tasks in testing Web-based applications. Broker agents use the ontology as a means of inferences to manage the knowledge about agents and assign each task to the most appropriate agent.

Fortifying web-based applications automatically
Browser designers create security mechanisms to help web developers protect web applications, but web developers are usually slow to use these features in web-based applications (web apps). In this paper we introduce Zan, a browser-based system for applying new browser security mechanisms to legacy web apps automatically. Our key insight is that web apps often contain enough information, via web developer source-code patterns or key properties of web-app objects, to allow the browser to infer opportunities for applying new security mechanisms to existing web apps. We apply this new concept to protect authentication cookies, prevent web apps from being framed unwittingly, and perform JavaScript object deserialization safely. We evaluate Zan on up to the 1000 most popular websites for each of the three cases. We find that Zan can provide complimentary protection for the majority of potentially applicable websites automatically without requiring additional code from the web developers and with negligible incompatibility impact.

Model-Checking Driven Security Testing of Web-Based Applications
Model checking and security testing are two verification techniques available to help finding flaws in security-sensitive, distributed applications. In this paper, we present an approach to security testing of web-based applications in which test cases are automatically derived from counterexamples found through model checking. We illustrate our approach by discussing its application against of the SAML-based Single Sign-On for Google Apps.

Pavilion: a middleware framework for collaborative Web-based applications
This paper describes Pavilion, an object-oriented middleware framework for developing collaborative web-based applications. Pavilion enables a developer to construct new applications by inheriting and extending its default functionality. Reusable and extensible Pavilion components include interfaces to common web browsers, a reliable multicast protocol tailored for delivery of web resources, a leadership protocol for floor control, and a highly modular proxy server that supports data type-specific plug-ins. The architecture and operation of Pavilion are described, followed by a discussion of VGuide, a synchronous VRML application built using Pavilion. VGuide enables one user to lead other users through virtual worlds in a synchronous manner.
