Core muscle group training equipment and its method of use
A core muscle group training equipment includes a seat, a backrest located on the back side of the seat and a damping mechanism provided at the bottom side of the seat. When sitting on the seat and resting the back on the backrest, the user can selectively bend the upper body forwards and backwards to contract the proximal muscles, or keep the upper body immovable and move the lower body up and down to contract distal muscles. By means of biasing of the seat and the damping effect provided by the damping mechanism during operation, the muscle strength of the abdominal muscles is trained. TacTowers: an interactive training equipment for elite athletes
The interactive training equipment, TacTower, is aimed at supporting multiple elite athletes, such as handball players in training their micro-tactical skills in close-contact situations. It focuses on psychomotor abilities and trains the skills involved in reading the opponents' actions and anticipating the outcome while reacting accordingly. The Tac-Tower prototype will be demonstrated live, and here we summarize the main design issues, to give the reader a sense of how the elite sports context stands out from other interaction design domains. There is much potential for interaction design for the elite athletic community, as this domain holds interesting challenges while also inspiring relevant, new forms of interaction design for other domains.

MRI analysis of structural changes in skeletal muscles and surrounding tissues following long-term walking exercise with training equipment.
Muscular recovery after exercise is an important topic in sports medicine, and accurate and quantitative measurements of changes in muscle are required to assess muscular recovery. In the present study, we report a new analytical method to measure muscular changes quantitatively. The technique consists of three independent methods: image processing of two-dimensional MR images, morphological analysis using three-dimensional MR images, and diffusion tensor MRI. Using this method, we investigated changes in the quadriceps and biceps femoris and gluteus maximus muscles and surrounding tissues before and after 1 mo of exercise wearing training equipment. The subjects were 21 healthy adult female volunteers, 14 of whom wore training equipment and 7 who wore normal equipment. The percentage of adipose tissue in muscle after exercise in subjects who wore training equipment was on average 4.4% (P < 0.001) lower than that before exercise, and the peak point of the dorsal hip after exercise with use of the equipment was on average 10.8 mm higher than that before exercise. Further, the fractional anisotropy of water diffusion in muscles increased by an average of 0.039 (P < 0.001) after exercise with use of training equipment. In contrast, there was no significant difference before and after exercise in subjects who wore normal equipment. These results show that walking exercise while wearing training equipment thickens and tightens the muscular fiber tissues. This noninvasive measurement approach may allow quantitation of the athletic ability of the muscles, which is not measured conventionally, and is an effective method for analyzing skeletal muscles.

Multiple-joint exercises using elastic resistance bands vs. conventional resistance-training equipment: A cross-over study
Abstract Previous studies indicate that elastic resistance bands (ERB) can be a viable option to conventional resistance-training equipment (CRE) during single-joint resistance exercises, but their efficacy has not been established for several commonly used multiple-joint resistance exercises. Thus, we compared muscular activation levels in four popular multiple-joint exercises performed with ERB (TheraBand®) vs. CRE (Olympic barbell or cable pulley machines). In a cross-over design, men and women (n = 29) performed squats, stiff-legged deadlifts, unilateral rows and lateral pulldown using both modalities. Multilevel mixed-effects linear regression analyses of main and interaction effects, and subsequent post hoc analyses were used to assess differences between the two resistance-training modalities. CRE induced higher levels of muscle activation in the prime movers during all exercises (p < .001 for all comparisons), compared to muscle activation levels induced by ERB. The magnitude of the differences was marginal in lateral pulldown and unilateral rows and for the erector spinae during stiff-legged deadlifts. In squats the quadriceps femoris activations were substantially lower for ERB. The differences between ERB and CRE were mostly observed during the parts of the contractions where the bands were relatively slack, whilst the differences were largely eliminated when the bands became elongated in the end ranges of the movements. We conclude that ERB can be a feasible training modality for lateral pulldowns, unilateral rows and to some extent stiff-legged deadlifts, but not for the squat exercise.

An Approach to Guidance Motion by Gait-Training Equipment in Semipassive Walking
Recently, population aging and declining birth rate have become very serious, and people who lack walking capability have truly increased in Japan. To address this issue, gait training has become a requirement for them. Although some training systems have been researched in the past, a training system that entails guidance of walking has not been researched well. This paper focuses on guidance of walking, and it is aimed to develop a training system that utilizes the activity and passivity of the trainee. In addition, rhythmic walking, which takes walking stability and trainee safety into account, is aimed for. In this paper, an improved electric wheelchair is used as gait-training equipment (GTE); then, the trainee is towed by the GTE, and walking is guided. In this paper, a targeted walking cycle is predefined, and the GTE must distinguish the cycle in order to guide walking. Therefore, this paper uses the center of gravity (COG) of the trainee as the index. Thus, the GTE tows the trainee when the swing leg moves more forward than the stance leg; then, rhythmic walking can be guided. In addition, this paper proposes a method to control the GTE by a proportional-differential controller based on virtual compliance that is composed of mass, spring, and damper. The gait training can be safely achieved by deciding the desired position and velocity of the GTE from the tow force through virtual compliance. In this paper, the validity of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulation and experiment. The validity of the proposed system is verified by using a four-link robot whose geometric expression is known as the trainee; then, the application of the proposed method will be extended to a human trainee by only adjusting the parameters.

Effect of instability training equipment on lower limb kinematics and muscle activity.
To improve the effectiveness of training or therapy, it is important to know the benefits for each type of instability training equipment. The aim of this study was to show differences in lower limb kinematics and muscle activation during single leg standing on a slackline (SL) compared to a multi-functional rocker board (MD) and an air cushion (AC). In 14 subjects, mean angular velocity of the hip, knee and ankle, as well as the muscle activity (iEMG) from six lower limb muscles were recorded during 12 s of single leg standing task. Ankle in-/eversion and knee ab-/adduction angular velocity were highest for SL followed by MD and AC (all p < 0.05), as well as in the hip flex-/extension angular velocity with higher values for SL compared with AC (p < 0.01). Regarding iEMG, the rectus femoris muscle showed higher values for SL compared with MD (p < 0.05) and AC (p < 0.01). iEMG of biceps femoris muscle demonstrated higher values for MD compared to AC (p < 0.05), but with no difference to SL. Balancing on a SL is a more challenging exercise for the postural control system compared to MD and AC, and affects the knee and hip joint motion in particular.

Development of training equipment with an adaptive and learning mechanism using balloon actuator-sensor system
This paper proposes training equipment using a balloon actuator-sensor system (BASS) for persons unable to move their hands because of injury or disease. BASS is able to control the stiffness adaptively using an adaptive learning impedance controller. The pneumatic actuator has excellent compliance and flexibility, which is good for a human-mechanical system. However, it is also nonlinear, hence high precision control is difficult. Therefore, a CMAC-PID control scheme is installed. Finally, the BASS control performance is evaluated in a control experiment.

Comparison of Leg Strength Training Equipment.
In brief: Fifty-three male high school students aged 13 to 18 participated in a leg strength study to determine whether variable resistance (isotonic) or accommodative resistance (isokinetic) training was superior in developing leg muscle strength, endurance, and performance. Subjects were randomly assigned to three experimental groups: one that trained on isotonic equipment, one on modified isokinetic equipment, and a control group. The results suggest that training equipment can be used to increase strength, muscular endurance, and performance. However, there appears to be no clear superiority of one type of equipment over another when using the same training method.

Measurement of Power in Selectorized Strength Training Equipment.
We derived the exact analytical expression of the instantaneous joint power in exercises with single-joint, variable-resistance, selectorized strength-training equipment, taking into account all the relevant geometric, kinematic and dynamic variables of both the movable equipment elements (resistance input lever, cam-pulley system, weight stack) and of the user's exercising limb. A numerical algorithm was also designed to express, in the presence of a cam, the rectilinear kinematic variables of the weight stack as a function of the rotational kinematic variables of the resistance input lever, and vice versa. Given that information, one can measure the value of the instantaneous and mean joint power exclusively by means of a linear encoder placed on the weight stack or, alternatively, only by the use of an angular encoder placed on the rotational axis of the resistance lever. The results highlight that, for knee extension exercises with leg extension equipment, the real values of both instantaneous and mean joint power may differ by more than 50% in comparison with the values obtained by taking into account only the mass and velocity of the weight stack. These differences are notable not only in explosive exercises, but whenever considerable joint velocities/accelerations occur within the range of motion.

Physical rehabilitation assessment based on smart training equipment and mobile APPs
The access to patient-related information during decision-making and the information provided by training equipment, in the present, are still limited that made the objective evaluation of physical rehabilitation effectiveness a difficult task. The paper focuses on smart training equipment, expressed by smart walkers and crutches, for physical therapy monitoring. The used interfaces for visualization of the signals delivered by the measurement channels embedded on the level of training equipment are expressed by mobile devices and appropriate software applications (APPs). The implemented software applications provide appropriate information for physiotherapist about the personal health record and metrics associated with the interaction between patient and the instrumented equipment during rehabilitation sessions. Novel sensing solutions expressed by piezo resistive force sensors, MEMS inertial sensors and Doppler radar sensors perform the user assessment during training are also described. The appropriate processing of the data provided by smart objects as part of smart physiotherapy ecosystem permits to extract information about the rehabilitation outcome.

Reliability and validity of static balance measures in hemiplegic patients using balance feedback training equipment
Objective:To study the reliability and validity of Pro-Kine Line balance feedback training equipment in assessing static balance of hemiplegic patients, and to provide evidences for clinical application. Method:Twenty-four healthy adults (control group) and 24 hemiplegic patients with brain damage participated in this study, they were assessed twice with Pro-kine Line balance feedback training equipment within two days both in sitting and standing positions for static balance measurement. The standard deviation of sway extent and sway speed in both anterior-posterior (A/P) and left-right(L/R) directions of center of pressure(COP) as well as sway length and sway area of COP were measured. Result: ①Reliability test: Except standard deviation of sway extent in A/P direction of COP, there were moderate to high correlations (ICC=0.66—0.92) in 5 parameters in sitting position; there were moderate to high correlations in 6 parameters (ICC=0.57—0.93). ②Discriminating validity test: All the parameters obtained from hemiplegic patients were significantly different compared with those of control group (P0.01). ③Criteria validity test: All parameters obtained from standing positions had moderate negative correlations (-0.41—-0.64) with Berg balance scale scores. Conclusion:The Pro-Kine Line balance feedback training equipment had moderate to high reliability and validity in assessing static balance.
