Heterogeneity in Willingness-to-Pay for Theatre Productions: Individual Specific Willingness-to-Pay Estimates for Theatres, Shows and Their Attributes
This paper investigates people's preferences for live theatre, and heterogeneity in willingness-to-pay (WTP). A stated preference discrete choice model estimates utility and WTP for different attributes of theatre productions. Previous studies assumed fixed coefficients across all theatre-goers. This study allows coefficients of attributes to vary across individuals in the population, providing information on the heterogeneity of tastes. Theatre-goers' choices are used to estimate individual-based parameters for a person's tastes in theatre productions. The analysis reveals the heterogeneity of tastes for different types of plays and ticket price; and the significance of reviews by critics and word of mouth opinions as important variables determining choice.

European Court of Human Rights : Unifaun Theatre Productions Limited and Others v. Malta
On 15 May 2018, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) delivered a judgment regarding a peculiar application of the Maltese Cinema and Stage Regulations. A theatre group, Unifaun Theatre Productions, had been prevented from producing and performing the play “Stitching”, due to a ban imposed by the Board for Film and Stage Classification (the Board). This interference with the theatre group’s right to freedom of expression was subsequently confirmed by the domestic courts, including the Constitutional Court of Malta. According to the Constitutional Court, the play contained several scenes that affected the morality and decency of the entire production, and it was within the Board’s competence to assess that in line with the Cinema and Stage Regulations. The Constitutional Court referred to phrases which constituted disparaging and insolent remarks towards more than one belief, towards women and towards the suffering of the Jews in the Second World War. In the Court’s view, the limits of decency had been breached due to the blasphemy which was an offence under Maltese law and to the vilification of the dignity of a people, of a woman, of children, and of the human being, as well as the extreme glorification of sexual perversion. In upholding the legitimate and justified character of the interference with the theatre group’s freedom of expression, the Constitutional Court inter alia referred to the case law of the ECtHR in Otto-Preminger-Institut v. Austria (IRIS 1995-1/1). The ECtHR however finds that the Maltese law was not of a sufficient quality and that the interference was a result of a procedure which was not prescribed by law. As the interference was not lawful within the meaning of the ECHR, the ECtHR deemed it is not necessary to further determine whether the interference was necessary in a democratic society. Unanimously the ECtHR concludes that there has been a violation of Article 10 ECHR.

Theatre training and performance as gender mainstreaming strategies in Zimbabwe: the case of Amakhosi Theatre Productions
This paper discusses Amakhosi Theatre Productions’ theatre training and performance programmes as a gender mainstreaming strategy in the period 1983‒2000. Through the gender equity approach lens, this paper traces the development and crafting of gender-sensitive training programmes and performances within the structure of Amakhosi Theatre Productions and, later, Amakhosi Cultural Centre as a gender mainstreaming strategy. Through exploring the development of major women arts practitioners that emerged out of Amakhosi Performing Arts Workshop (APAW) and other training programmes, this paper historically locates Amakhosi Theatre Productions and its training programmes as sites of gender empowerment and development. Amakhosi Theatre Productions was formed in 1980 by young people who were formerly members of Dragons Karate Club. It followed therefore that most plays performed by Amakhosi Theatre Productions were male-dominated in terms of cast. In this light, performance became one of the areas that needed to be transformed as far as gender was concerned. This paper examines the significance and role of plays such as Stitsha (1992) in mainstreaming and catapulting women into position of leadership and management at Amakhosi Theatre Productions. Finally, this paper positions training and performance programmes as alternative gender mainstreaming strategies that can be appropriated by other arts and creative industries in Africa.

Aesthetic and Utilitarian Considerations in Design Evaluation for Theatre Productions
This study proposes a few parameters for assessing designs for theatrical productions. As a background, it reviews the traditional functions of members of the theatrical design team and goes further to examine the technicalities of assessment of the arts via the elements of design and the principles of composition. The study takes a cursory look at conformity to aesthetic cannons, functionality of design, applicability of design to production and precision in script interpretation as the major parameters for assessment of design products for the theatre. In view of the place of the audience as a principal component of the theatre ensemble, the role of the audience as evaluator is also examined. The study concludes that design review and evaluation are necessary to ensure proficiency in theatre productions. Decomposition with New Technologies in Contemporary Slovak Theatre Productions
This case study focuses on one of the principles of theatre decomposition and illustrates it with the analysis of the staging of the contemporary opera Muž v skafandri [Man in a Spacesuit, 2020] of the composer and librettist Miroslav Tóth, directed by Jan Komárek. The aim of this study is to zoom in on contemporary cross-media and cross-genre trends in Slovak theatre productions that use new technologies, by which theatre makers intervene into the composition of the staging by deconstructing its means of expression. The scenes of the productions are fragmentized; the theatre makers break them down into their basic components to find new possibilities and meanings, while the recipients perceive these associatively.

Equity and the Academy: A Survey of Theatre Productions at Canadian Post-Secondary Institutions
On a periodic basis, reports from professional arts organizations as well as articles in the popular press scrutinize the inequitable rates of gender participation in the professional theatre landscape. But what about the school play, in particular at Canadian post-secondary institutions with drama and theatre programs? This article disseminates and analyzes empirical data about artistic programming at post-secondary institutions, with a specific focus on the gender ratio of playwrights. Nicholas Hanson and Alexa Elser collected information about mainstage theatre productions connected to forty-five English-language post-secondary institutions across Canada, spanning a period of three academic years: 2012/13, 2013/14, and 2014/15. Hanson and Elser’s research reveals that schools produce plays written by women even less frequently than professional theatres do. Arguing that a greater focus on gender equity in the academy offers the potential to implement substantive change, Hanson and Elser provide resources and recommendations to bolster the production of plays by women at post-secondary institutions.

Interrogating community theatre as a tool for change and social development : the case of Amakhosi Theatre Productions company
This article focuses on selected community theatrical productions that have been undertaken by the Amakhosi Theatre Productions company to develop the Matabeleland region. The article explores the selected theatrical projects in relation to the developmental and pedagogical elements adopted by the Amakhosi Theatre Productions company to advocate social change and development in Matabeleland. Through qualitative content analysis, the paper assesses these theatrical performances in relation to community theatre, as the institution is largely premised on providing people with training and skills as a way of empowering the community. As a result, the research establishes how the plays are used to motivate, mobilise and develop communities for social change. The article also makes use of interviews with relevant people from Amakhosi Theatre Productions company and some stakeholders that they have engaged in the selected projects. The article concludes that there is a remarkable change in the way people live if they are part of the projects that are designed to develop them. This conclusion was reached by comparing when theatre for development would be imposed on these marginalised societies and when Amakhosi Theatre Productions company decided to engage and involve local people, using their local languages. The participatory aspect has proved to be one of the most important elements in theatre for social change.

Investigating the Role of Theatre in the Fight against HIV/AIDS: A Case Study of Amakhosi Theatre Productions
This study investigates the role of theatre in the fight against HIV/AIDS. A case study of Amakhosi Theatre Productions (ATP) was used. The study analyses the role of theatre for HIV/AIDS prevention, ascertains to what extent theatre assists in the prevention of HIV/AIDS and identifies the message being communicated through theatre. A case study design was used to investigate the role theatre in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Quantitative method was employed in the study i.e in depth interview, focus groups, documented information and observations. The main paradigms guiding this study are drama theory, social learning theory and participation. This thesis set out to explore the effectiveness of theatre as a communication tool for communities and raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and to draw conclusions in terms of strength and weakness. The usefulness of these paradigms in the study is mainly on the emphasis of communities being agents of their own change. The findings illustrated theatre as a creative, interactive and fun way to raise people’s awareness about HHI/AIDS. It was found out that the theatre is participatory, uses both play and message and combines entertainment to educate and communicate highly sensitive information. This makes it an ideal communication tool that easily attracts the communities’ attention, help them to personalize the risk of HIV/AIDS and participate in finding their solutions to this problem. However, it was discovered that though theatre is highly effective in the role of fight against HIV/AIDS, it has challenges because its performance might be limited due to the facilities, lack of social partners and environment and culture not being conducive. Preparations of dialogue and preparation of performance takes long time, it is expensive to buy costumes and live drama might cause the audience to try to practice some of the bad ideas they watch.

Enrico Melozzi is an Italian composer, conductor, cellist and discographic producer. He is known for his extraordinary capacity to adapt and feel totally at ease in contrasting music worlds; he has in fact worked with some of the greatest living classical musicians as well as pop singers, and he is regularly commissioned to write symphonic operas, film music, ballets and theatre productions. Enrico's bubbly personality has led him to create some of the most unique ensembles, such as the \100cellos\ which he founded with Giovanni Sollima, or the \Orchestra Notturna Clandestina\ which gathers musicians together at night time in an occupied theatre in Rome, where they rehearse and prepare for professional concerts in exiting venues.
