Development of a remote tank inspection robotic system
RedZone Robotics is currently developing a remote tank inspection (RTI) robotic system for Westinghouse Idaho Nuclear Company (WINCO). WINCO intends to use the RTI robotic system at the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant, a facility that contains a tank farm of several 1,135,500-{ell} (300,000-gal), 15.2-m (50-ft)-diam, high-level liquid waste storage tanks. The primary purpose of the RTI robotic system is to inspect the interior of these tanks for corrosion that may have been caused by the combined effects of radiation, high temperature, and caustic by the combined effects of radiation, high temperature, and caustic chemicals present inside the tanks. The RTI robotic system features a vertical deployment unit, a robotic arm, and a remote control console and computer (located up to 30.5 m (100 ft) away from the tank site). All actuators are high torque, electric dc brush motors that are servocontrolled with absolute position feedback. The control system uses RedZone's standardized intelligent controller for enhanced telerobotics, which provides a high speed, multitasking environment on a VME bus. Currently, the robot is controlled in a manual, job-button, control mode; however, control capability is available to develop preprogrammed, automated modes of operation.

Attitude control based on fuzzy logic for continuum aircraft fuel tank inspection robot
With a compliant structure and excellent bending properties, continuum robot has hyper-redundant degrees of freedom, and can be used in space-constrained environments as the aircraft fuel tank. Therefore, a continuum robot is designed to help crews inspect aircraft fuel tanks, which can improve maintenance efficiency and reduce the intensity of crews. According to the requirements of aircraft fuel tank inspection, the compliant and extensible drive mechanisms of the continuum robot are designed. The kinematic models of single joint segment and multi-joint segments of continuum robot are analyzed, and homogeneous transformation matrices are obtained. To improve control performance, a closed-loop fuzzy controller based on attitude feedback is proposed. The attitude sensor is installed on the top of each joint segment of a snake-like arm to form a closed-loop control system, and a fuzzy controller is designed to achieve fast and accurate control of the robot. The prototype platform of the continuum robot is built, and practical experiments are implemented on the platform. The effectiveness and stability of the fuzzy controller based on attitude feedback are verified.

Collision free path planning based on region clipping for aircraft fuel tank inspection robot
Continuum robot has potential to run freely through a cluttered environment as aircraft fuel tank. To improve manual maintenance, we designed an aircraft fuel tank inspection robot which was composed of cable-driven sections. A suitable path is essential for the robot to reach the target zone while avoiding obstacles, but path planning for continuum robot is a challenge due to their complex kinematics models. To depict the collision free planning problem, a nonlinear, constrained optimization formulation was adopted. Projection strategy was presented and an imaginary straight line between the origin and the target was made up as a reference line to simplify the planning problem. We focused on the decrease of computing time complexity, and based on region clipping, a novel forward search method was proposed to solve this optimization-based planning problem. With the reference straight line, the minimum distance summation (MDS) was calculated to decide the optimal path relatively. Experiments on MATLAB were reasonably designed. Simulations and results analysis demonstrated excellent performance of region clipping search method and feasibility of the avoidance algorithm.

Model analysis for a continuum aircraft fuel tank inspection robot based on the Rzeppa universal joint
A continuum robot was designed to assist aircraft crew in inspecting fuel tanks, thereby decreasing the workload of fuel tank inspection and improving the efficiency of maintenance. The Rzeppa universal joint and cylindrical helical spring were taken as the joint section of the main body, and the load capacity of continuum robot had been improved greatly. Based on the isokinetic feature of the Rzeppa universal joint, the single-section kinematic analysis of the continuum robot was conducted according to the unit load method of cylindrical helical spring. Next, the influence of variable curvature bending properties of the plant was reduced, and the mapping relationship among the end position, joint variables, and the length of driving cables was obtained. Finally, the simulation and prototype experiments were performed, and the results proved the strong loading capacity of the continuum robot and the effectiveness of the kinematic model.

Techniques for storage tank inspection
The demand for integrity assessment of oil storage tanks is increasing. Leaks of these tanks should be prevented. Early detection of bad spots as potential leak locations is preferred. This is enhanced by concern for the environment. The call for proper inspection techniques is amplified by the fact that the world tank park is aging. Several major spill leaks have already occurred. Moreover, legislation to prove tank integrity on regular basis begins to emerge. In some countries one has to pay penalties proportional to the estimated ecological damage. This paper describes three economically attractive techniques for tank inspection providing: easy thickness gaging of the tank wall; detection of local corrosion of the tank floor; and early leakage warning.

Scarab III Remote Vehicle Deployment for Waste Retrieval and Tank Inspection
The Robotics Technology Development Program now known as the Robotics Crosscut Program, funded the development and deployment of a small remotely operated vehicle for inspection and cleanout of small horizontal waste storage tanks that have limited access. Besides the advantage of access through tank risers as small as 18-in. diameter, the small robotic system is also significantly less expensive to procure and to operate than larger remotely operated vehicle (ROV) systems. The vehicle specified to support this activity was the ROV Technologies, Inc., Scarab. The Scarab is a tracked vehicle with an independently actuated front and rear ''toe'' degree-of-freedom which allows the stand-off and angle of the vehicle platform with respect to the floor to be changed. The Scarab is a flexible remote tool that can be used for a variety of tasks with its primary uses targeted for inspection and small scale waste retrieval. The vehicle and any necessary process equipment are mounted in a deployment and containment enclosure to simplify deployment and movement of the system from tank to tank. This paper outlines the technical issues related to the Scarab vehicle and its deployment for use in tank inspection and waste retrieval operation

A novel mechatronic design of wall climbing robot for steel storage tank inspection
Manual inspection and maintenance of above ground storage tanks can be dangerous and time consuming. This paper presents a wall climbing mobile robot with permanent magnetic adhesion mechanism which can be used for tank inspection. The architecture of mechanical system is attended to in detail. Through a static and dynamic analysis, permanent magnetic adhesion mechanism is chosen for the robot. The tracked locomotion mechanism and the magnetic wheels are used simultaneously. After the robot modeling, the parameters design for the adhesion and locomotion mechanisms are derived.
