2 | Breakdown, scaling and volt-ampere characteristics of low current micro-discharges | We give preliminary results on the breakdown and low current limit of volt‐ampere characteristics of simple parallel plate non-equilibrium dc discharges at standard (centimetre size) and micro-discharge conditions. Experiments with micro-discharges are reported attempting to establish the maintenance of E/N, pd and j/p 2 scalings at small dimensions down to 20 µm. 3 | Noise Analysis and Performance Comparison of Low Current Measurement Systems for Biomedical Applications | In this paper, we report on the noise analysis of low current measurement systems for biomedical applications and their fundamental limits. We analyzed resistive feedback, capacitive feedback and current amplifier circuits for low current measurement systems. Detailed noise analysis for different biomedical applications are presented and matched with measurement data using a 0.5-μm fabrication process. Based on the theoretical analysis and the corresponding measurement results, the capacitive feedback system provides better noise performance for the measurement of low current than the others. The capacitive feedback circuit is capable of measuring 750 fA RMS at a 10 kHz sampling rate, whereas the resistive feedback provides 4 pA and the current conveyor provides 600 pA at the same bandwidth. 4 | The role of heavy particles in kinetics of low current discharges in argon at high electric field to gas number density ratio | We have developed a coupled system of Monte Carlo simulation codes for modeling of electron, ion, and fast neutral kinetics in low pressure, low current discharges. The procedure was tested for ion drift tube data by using different cross-section sets including the recent anisotropic set of Phelps [A. V. Phelps, J. Appl. Phys. 76, 747 (1994)]. 5 | CMOS Low Current Measurement System for Biomedical Applications | We present a micro-chip implementation of a low current measurement system for biomedical applications using capacitive feedback that exhibits 190 fA of RMS noise in a 1 kHz bandwidth. The sampling rate is selectable up to 100 kHz. When measuring the amplifier noise with a 10 G Ω resistor and a 47 pF capacitor at the input, typical of cell membrane capacitance in DNA and patch clamp experiments, the measured RMS noise was 2.44 pA on a 50 pA signal in a 10 kHz bandwidth. Two channels were implemented on 630 × 440 μm2 using a 0.5- μm 3-metal 2-poly CMOS process. Each channel consumes 1.5 mW of power from a 3.3 V supply. 6 | Electrodeposition of Zn-Mn Alloys at Low Current Densities | The electrodeposition of zinc-manganese alloys was studied at low current densities to design a process suitable for the automotive industry. Hull cell experiments were used to select the plating bath. The best results were obtained when both metals were in complexed forms Zn(II) with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and Mn(II) with citrate or malate. With these electrolytes the codeposition was achieved at low current densities, but current efficiencies were low. The characterization of the alloys obtained galvanostatically showed that most deposits were compact and showed different morphologies, mainly depending on the composition of the alloys and on the complexing agent for Mn(II). 7 | New Method for Detecting Low Current Faults in Electrical Distribution Systems | In electrical distribution systems, low current faults may be caused by a high impedance fault or by the fault current limitation caused by the neutral to ground connection. In the former case, an indirect contact or insulation degradation give a high value of the fault impedance. In the latter, the neutral grounding may be either isolated or compensated. 8 | Factors affecting energy deposition and expansion in single wire low current experiments | Single wire experiments were performed on a low current pulse generator at Cornell University. A 220 nF capacitor charged to 15–25 kV was used to drive single wire experiments. The capacitor and wire holder were connected in series through an external variable inductor to control the current rise rate. This external series inductance was adjustable from 0.2 to 2 μH. When coupled with the range of charging voltages this results in current rise rates from 5 to 50 A/ns. The current heated the wire through liquid and vapor phases until plasma formed around the wire. Energy deposition and expansion rates were measured as functions of the current rise rate. These results indicated better energy deposition and higher expansion rates with faster current rise rates. 10 | Low current arc modes of short length and time: a review | Until the middle of the 20th century the electric arc was known solely as a steady, self sustaining gas discharge phenomenon requiring certain minimum values of current and voltage, depending on the electrode material and the gas environment. Special investigations on material transfer in contacts switching low direct currents, however, revealed step by step that there were certain till then unknown unstable arc modes appearing in extremely short electrode gaps only but requiring minimum current and voltage values distinctly lower than those of the classical steady arc discharge in air.
