Wireless networked lighting systems for optimizing energy savings and user satisfaction
Energy savings and user satisfaction are two major design considerations for modern lighting systems. While some new commercial lighting systems for shared-space office buildings have been able to achieve significant savings via various lighting control strategies, the occupantspsila diverse lighting preferences and visual comfort have been generally overlooked or even compromised. Moreover, retrofitting legacy buildings with modern lighting systems is still economically unattractive due to the high cost of global rewiring. Leveraging the versatility of wireless sensor and actuator network technologies, this paper describes a wireless networked lighting system that fulfills both design criteria for modern lighting systems - energy efficiency and user satisfaction. The intelligent lighting optimization algorithm formulates lighting control as a linear programming problem to minimize energy usage and meet occupantspsila lighting preferences at the same time. The hardware of the lighting system is designed with minimizing retrofitting efforts and costs in mind, and an implementation of the developed system in a multiperson office shows substantial energy savings while meeting userspsila lighting preferences.

A method for projecting useful life of LED lighting systems
This study investigated a non-invasive method to determine the junction temperature of AlGaInP light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in a system. Because the primary cause for the AlGaInP LED degradation is junction temperature, this method can be used to predict LED life. Currently, life estimates of LED lighting systems quoted by manufacturers (commonly 100,000 hours) are based on the average life of a single LED measured under specific laboratory conditions. In reality, rates of degradation are much different for LEDs in a system than for those in a laboratory environment because the packaging and the environmental conditions in which the system operates can affect LED performance. Current practices for estimation require time-consuming life tests to accurately predict the life of LEDs. Therefore, a rapid estimation method for LED life is needed. Based on previous studies, the authors chose to focus on the measurement of junction temperature and its relationship to LED degradation. The primary objective of this study was to verify that wavelength shift could be used to estimate accurately the junction temperature of 5mm epoxy encapsulated AlGaInP LEDs. In this study, the junction temperature was increased by changing the drive current while holding the ambient temperature surrounding the LED constant, and by changing the surrounding temperature while holding the drive current steady. Experimental results from this study showed that for commercial LEDs, peak wavelengths shift proportionally to junction temperature regardless of how the temperature is created at the junction, and that this linear relationship could be used as a direct measure of the junction temperature. Because the primary cause for the degradation of AlGaInP LEDs is junction heat, the light output degradation rate of these types of LEDs can be predicted by measuring the spectral shift. Therefore, LED systems can be evaluated without disassembly in their intended application.

A New Control Method of Interleaved Single-Stage Flyback AC–DC Converter for Outdoor LED Lighting Systems
In outdoor light-emitting diode (LED) lighting systems, there are a lot of applications. Depending on the output power rating, the power stage to drive an LED can be classified into single-stage and two-stage structures. The single-stage structure is for low-power LED lighting applications. However, it is difficult to apply at over 60-70 W of output power because of its low efficiency and huge transformer at high power. On the other hand, the two-stage structure is usually used for high power applications. However, it is undesirable to cover wide output power range because of its poor power factor (PF) under the light load condition. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a new pulse duty cycle control method with pulse frequency modulation for an interleaved single-stage flyback ac-dc converter. The proposed converter provides high efficiency under heavy loads with low ac line condition and under light loads with high ac line condition. In addition, the proposed converter shows high PF and low total harmonic distortion even when the output power is very low. As a result, a single LED ac-dc converter can cover wide power range for outdoor LED lighting applications. To verify the validity of the proposed converter, an 81-W prototype converter has been implemented and experimented on.

A Design Methodology for Smart LED Lighting Systems Powered By Weakly Regulated Renewable Power Grids
The increasing use of intermittent renewable energy sources to decarbonize electric power generation is expected to introduce dynamic instability to the mains. This situation is of particular concern for mini-grids or isolated grids in which wind and/or solar power sources are the dominant or the sole power sources. In this paper, we utilize the photo-electro-thermal theory to develop a design methodology for LED lighting systems for weakly regulated voltage sources, with the objectives of minimizing the fluctuation of the human luminous perception and adopting reliable LED driver with long lifetime and robustness against extreme weather conditions. The proposed LED system, practically verified in a 10 kVA small power grid driven by an ac voltage source and a wind energy simulator, can be considered as a smart load with its load demand following the power generation. A typical swing of 40 V in the mains will cause only 15% actual light variation in a 132 W LED system when compared with 40% change in 150 W high-pressure-sodium lamp system. The design methodology enables future large-scale LED systems to be designed as a new generation of smart loads that can adapt to the voltage and power fluctuations arising from the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources.

Lighting systems to save energy in educational classrooms
In educational buildings a significant component of the energy used is spent in illuminating the interior of the building. As the energy costs rise, increasing effort has gone into minimizing the energy consumption of lighting installations. This effort could follow three basic directions: new more efficient equipment (lamps, control gear, etc.), utilization of improved lighting design practices (localised task lighting systems), improvements in lighting control systems to avoid energy waste for unoccupied and daylight hours. By controlling the lighting in such a way that the lighting level is always accurately matched to the actual need allows to save on the energy costs and to improve the human comfort and efficiency. Establishing an integrated lighting control concept is a very important part of the lighting design process. The paper describes two different smart control systems designed according the same concept but with different components, for the lighting systems in two classrooms at the Engineering Faculty of the Universty of Rome Sapienza. The installations are realized according to a research project about the assessment of the impact of lighting control systems in electrical energy consumption and energy commitments. The results are useful to compare the two different control approaches (switching and dimming) and the two different kind of actions (with or without luminaries upgrade) in order to analyze costs, energy consumption and comfort. The two different control technologies are compared with respect to a third classroom without smart control, used as reference for evaluations.

Energy Optimization of Road Tunnel Lighting Systems
A road tunnel is an enclosed and covered infrastructure for the vehicular traffic. Its lighting system provides 24 h of artificial sources only, with a higher amount of electric power used during the day. Due to safety reasons, when there is natural lighting outside the tunnel, the lighting levels in the stretches right after the entrance and before the exit must be high, in order to guide the driver’s eye towards the middle of the tunnel where the luminance must guarantee safe driving, avoid any over-dimensioning of the lighting systems, and produce energy savings. Such effects can be reached not only through the technological advances in the field of artificial lighting sources with high luminous efficiency, but also through new materials for road paving characterized by a higher reflection coefficient than other ordinary asphalts. This case study examines different technical scenarios, analyzing and comparing possible energy and economic savings. Traditional solutions are thus compared with scenarios suggesting the solutions previously mentioned. Special asphalts are interesting from an economic point of view, whereas the high costs of LED sources nowadays represent an obstacle for their implementation.

IoT-enabled smart lighting systems for smart cities
Over the past few decades, the rate of urbanization has increased enormously. More enhanced services and applications are needed in urban areas to provide a better lifestyle. Smart city, which is a concept of interconnecting modern digital technologies in the context of a city, is a potential solution to enhance the quality and performance of urban services. With the introduction of Internet-of-Things (IoT) in the smart city, new opportunities have emerged to develop new services and integrate different application domains with each other using Information and Communication Technologies. However, to ensure seamless services in an IoT-enabled smart city environment, all the applications have to be maintained with limited energy resources. One of the core sectors that can be improved significantly by implementing IoT is the lighting system of a city since it consumes more energy than other parts of a city. In a smart city, the lighting system is integrated with advanced sensors and communication channels to obtain a Smart Lighting System (SLS). The goal of an SLS is to obtain an autonomous and more efficient lighting management system. In this paper, we provide an overview of the SLS and review different IoT-enabled communication protocols, which can be used to realize the SLS in the context of a smart city. Moreover, we analyzed different usage scenarios for IoT-enabled indoor and outdoor SLS and provide an analysis of the power consumption. Our results reveal that IoT-enabled smart lighting systems can reduce power consumption up to 33.33% in both indoor and outdoor settings. Finally, we discussed the future research directions in SLS in the smart city.

Impact of building automation, controls and building management on energy performance of lighting systems
In a lighting system design to estimate the actual energy efficiency of lighting control systems is an important goal since an accurate evaluation could help and guide designers towards the most appropriate control system. This paper analyzes the methodology for calculating energy consumption for lighting systems and the impact of the Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS). It promotes a comprehensive ecodesign of lighting systems consisting in the adoption of the appropriate lighting components and the adaptive partitioned architecture of electrical distribution system and lighting system in general and independent local systems. It allows structurally to satisfy in each sub-area lighting and energy performances and to provide a basic efficient control system suitable for a manual or automatic regulation.

Control network for modern street lighting systems
This paper proposes a control network for a LED street lighting system. The use of LEDs is being considered a promising solution to modern street lighting systems, due to their longer lifetime, higher luminous efficiency and higher CRI. The proposed control network enables disconnection of the street lighting system from the mains during peak load time, reducing its impact in the distributed power system automatically at overload conditions. It also allows to reduce the power consumption, decrease the management cost and monitor the status information of each street lighting unit. In order to meet the system requirements, a wireless sensor network based on IEEE 802.15.4™ standard is employed. Its network layer is implemented using geographic routing strategy, which provides low overhead and high scalability features. However, due to well known drawbacks of the existing techniques, a novel routing algorithm is proposed. Simulations show that this algorithm leads to a significant improvement of routing performance when applied to sparse large scale scenarios, which is the case of a street lighting system. Field tests have been performed on IEEE 802.15.4-compliant wireless control units. The obtained experimental results show that the proposed control network is able to meet the requirements of a LED street lighting system.

Daylighting Control and Simulation for LED-Based Energy-Efficient Lighting Systems
This paper presents a simulation environment and daylighting control strategy to achieve energy-efficient lighting while providing desired lighting levels at the target points. The lighting strategy is based on a self-tuning multivariable controller, which maintains the illuminance levels at user-defined set-points while improving the energy consumption due to artificial lighting. The simulation environment utilizes the so-called layered lighting design, which allows one to evaluate the performance of different control strategies. Furthermore, the environment can be used to validate the performance of a lighting control strategy, in quasi-real-time, and assess its potential energy savings. The above approach has not been investigated in prior literature and may thus be of interest in energy-aware automated lighting systems. A case study is presented for an open-plan office space exposed to variable natural light through windows and a set of individually addressable light emitting diode luminaries.
