Probe-level measurement error improves accuracy in detecting differential gene expression
MOTIVATION Finding differentially expressed genes is a fundamental objective of a microarray experiment. Numerous methods have been proposed to perform this task. Existing methods are based on point estimates of gene expression level obtained from each microarray experiment. This approach discards potentially useful information about measurement error that can be obtained from an appropriate probe-level analysis. Probabilistic probe-level models can be used to measure gene expression and also provide a level of uncertainty in this measurement. This probe-level measurement error provides useful information which can help in the identification of differentially expressed genes. RESULTS We propose a Bayesian method to include probe-level measurement error into the detection of differentially expressed genes from replicated experiments. A variational approximation is used for efficient parameter estimation. We compare this approximation with MAP and MCMC parameter estimation in terms of computational efficiency and accuracy. The method is used to calculate the probability of positive log-ratio (PPLR) of expression levels between conditions. Using the measurements from a recently developed Affymetrix probe-level model, multi-mgMOS, we test PPLR on a spike-in dataset and a mouse time-course dataset. Results show that the inclusion of probe-level measurement error improves accuracy in detecting differential gene expression. AVAILABILITY The MAP approximation and variational inference described in this paper have been implemented in an R package pplr. The MCMC method is implemented in Matlab. Liquid Level Measurement Based on FBG-Embedded Diaphragms With Temperature Compensation
This paper proposes a fiber optic liquid level sensor system based on a silica fiber Bragg grating embedded into an epoxy resin diaphragm coupled to a temperature reference sensor, used to compensate the temperature cross-sensitivity for improving the liquid level measurement accuracy. The proposed system was tested in an industrial water tank with heating and recirculation. The results demonstrated a temperature cross-sensitivity reduction, enhancing the liquid level measurement thermal stability by a factor of nine, when compared with some single head sensor configurations reported in literature. Our system presents high linearity ( $R>0.999$ ), superior sensitivity (2.8 pm/mm), and much lower temperature related error (1.04 mm/°C), when compared with the other diaphragm-based sensors recently reported in the literature.

All-fiber-optic sensor for liquid level measurement
An experimental realization of a simple all-fiber-optic sensor for liquid level measurement is demonstrated. It is an intensity-modulated on–off switching sensor whose operating principle is based on the frustrated-total-internal-reflection effect caused by the refractive-index change of the surrounding medium. The basic optical element in the scheme is a sensing single fiber which serves simultaneously to transmit both the forward laser emission to the investigated medium and the useful signal backreflected from the fiber tip that is the sensing element. In order to achieve a maximum sensor sensitivity, we use a specially shaped fiber tip in two profile variants: angled and retroreflecting. The experimental investigations of the sensor properties and the results obtained at the pure-water level measurement confirm the sensor potential in liquid level determination with a high accuracy, exceeding 10 μm.

A multi-interface level measurement system using a segmented capacitance sensor for oil separators
A multi-interface level measurement system using a 64-segment capacitance sensor has been developed for use in oil separators. It can not only locate the multi-interfaces between different phases, such as gas/oil, oil/water and water/sludge, but also detect the foam layer between gas and oil. Experimental results show that the interfaces of gas/oil and oil/water can be easily identified by using a simple normalized difference algorithm and the foam signal has a unique spectrum that can be acquired by fast Fourier transform analysis.

All fiber‐optic sensor for liquid level measurement
In this article, a simple intensity‐modulated fiber optic sensor for liquid level measurement is presented. The sensor principle is based on frustrated total internal reflection effect caused by refractive index change of a medium surrounding an optical fiber. The end face of a step‐index multimode optical fiber is polished to form a hemispherical tip so that a part of the forward propagating modes is reflected in the reverse direction by the effect of total internal reflection. The change of medium (due to contact of the tip with the liquid) modifies the critical angle for the back reflected light thus giving modulated output power. The experimental results of the sensor obtained for different liquids (pure water, ethanol) confirm the sensor potential for liquid level determination with high accuracy nearly 5 μm and repeatability. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Low-Cost Comb-Electrode Capacitive Sensing Device for Liquid-Level Measurement
A low-cost capacitive sensing device for liquid-level measurement is presented in this letter. We proposed a novel comb, such as pattern of electrode. An equivalent capacitor can be formed by the electrode and the liquid within the container, and the equivalent capacitance will be proportional to the area of the electrode. Therefore, when the liquid-level position reaches a larger area of the comb electrode, the equivalent capacitance will have significant gradient changes. The measurement results show a variation error of about 6%. The comb-electrode offers simple, effective, and accurate advantages without any additional calibration. This comb-electrode is easily to be applied to a non-intrusive monitoring system which can be found in various places around biomedical applications.

All-Fiber Mach–Zehnder Interferometer for Liquid Level Measurement
A new liquid level sensor based on in fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed and demonstrated. The MZI is formed by cascading two peanut-shaped fiber structures in single-mode fiber. In the water level experiment, the sensitivities of sensors with lengths of 53.5 and 75.4 mm are -0.1025 and -0.0279 nm/mm, respectively. The absolute value of sensitivity increases with the refractive index of liquid. The MZI presented in this paper has advantages of low cost and ease of fabrication, which can be a potential advantage in the liquid level measurement.

A novel approach for a high-precision multitarget-level measurement system based on time-domain reflectometry
A novel approach for a high-precision multitarget time-domain reflectometry (TDR) level measurement system is presented with a greatly improved performance. It fulfills the growing needs of today's industrial level measurement applications. Starting with the well-known concept of the TDR, a novel concept for frequency stabilization and pulse generation lead to a higher performance compared to conventional industrial systems with respect to their precision, resolution, and dynamic range. This paper focuses on the description of the improved signal generation unit, comprising the generation of two RF signals with a small frequency offset and a good phase-noise performance and the generation of short electromagnetic pulses, optimized for the detection of thin interface layers. Accurate and energy-efficient congestion level measurement in ad hoc networks
Congestion in ad hoc networks not only degrades throughput, but also wastes scarce energy due to a large number of retransmissions and packet drops. For efficient congestion control, an accurate and timely estimation of resource demands by measuring the network congestion level is necessary. Congestion level measurement in ad hoc networks is more difficult than in wired networks due to time-variant channel capacity, contention among neighboring nodes, and non-deterministic node scheduling. We propose a new congestion detection mechanism that quantifies the congestion level accurately and energy-efficiently at both a node-level (implemented at the MAC layer) and a flow-level (implemented at the routing layer) in ad hoc networks. For accurate congestion measurement, a set of metrics that decouple the measurement from various MAC protocol characteristics is defined. For energy-efficient congestion measurement, an asynchronous channel loading measurement scheme, called lazy measurement, which emulates synchronous measurement by using virtual channel sampling, is incorporated into the proposed scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed mechanism significantly cuts down the energy needed to measure congestion accurately, while maintaining the high level of accuracy needed for timely congestion control.

Embedded implementation of image-based water-level measurement system
This paper proposes an embedded system for measuring the water level on a river using a camera. One of the main problems of using a camera in water-level measurement is that the light reflection on water surface changes rapidly. To solve this problem, this paper uses the property that variation of light reflection on the ruler showing the scale is relatively smaller than on the water surface. To emphasise this difference of light reflectance on the ruler surface and water surface, the proposed method accumulates the degree of light reflectance variation between the current image and the previous images and constructs a histogram using them. In this histogram, the boundary between the ruler and water surface is appeared as the sharpest drop point. To take into account the noise effects, the proposed algorithm finds the candidate points first and then finally select the water level among them using the reference water. The reference water level is roughly determined as the sharpest drop point in the histogram of the binary image. By installing the proposed system on actual river and testing the water-level measuring experiment in real time, its efficiency has been confirmed.
