Kolin IV
With pride and the most modern printing techniques we package your favourite products. In Kolín since 1879. We could choose to stay a humble lithography printer producing wall calendars. However, printing colours really got under our skin – it has become our passion and left us wanting more. So we have started to enhance our printing range of goods. We have gradually added the production of playing cards, packaging and etiquettes to calendars. Currently we are the biggest Czech producer of drink vignettes. We give a face and identity to your product exactly as we would do with Pilsner Urquell, Coca-Cola and Studentská pečeť. We make use of the most modern printing machines in order to guarantee output of the highest quality. We provide a complex technological production process: from compiling first graphic proposals to producing printing forms, engraving rollers, colour mixtures up to the printing itself. Our expertise includes gravure printing, flexographic printing, offset, letterpress printing and high quality digital printing. We specialize in flexible packaging and a wide range of etiquettes printing. In OTK Group we produce both traditional graphic and self-adhesive labels and special types of shrink-sleeve and in-module vignettes. We even think of the little things, like producing printing bags for food products.

A Practical Treatise upon Modern Printing Machinery and Letterpress Printing
First published in 1888, A Practical Treatise upon Modern Printing Machinery and Letterpress Printing by Wilson and Grey remains an important work for those interested in the Victorian mechanisation of printing. They list, with illustrations, all the different machines in use in the printing trade, in England and abroad. They outline the development of printing from the early hand presses, and discuss in detail the strengths and weaknesses of the different machines then in use. Information is provided on manufacturers and specifications of the multitude of machinery available for all stages of the printing and publishing process. The book contains valuable information on the development of colour printing, and covers book and newspaper printing as well as the needs of small jobbing firms. It will be of interest to historians of printing and publishing, printers, engineers and industrial archaeologists.

Characterization of flexo and letterpress printing plate ’ s surface roughness by indirect SEM image-based profilometry
In this paper indirect, image-based approach to the characterization of surface structure and roughness of flexographic and letterpress printing plates was investigated. Our previous research have sown that direct stylus profilometric method, when used in flexographic and letterpress printing plates surface roughness characterization, resulted in certain usage difficulties. Being a polymeric structure, surface of plates was scratched by stylus diamond tip and the measuring device has shown alt and slowdown in performance. The solution of such a problem lies in indirect and non-contact profilometry approach. According to literature findings SEM micrographs can be used for non-contact surface topography characterization, since they are excellent tool for visualization and qualitative description of surface topography. The indirect approach was based on use of Gwyddion software functions for analysis of SEM images and calculation of standard profilometric parameters. The results of the study have shown that it is possible to obtain profilometric parameters from analysis of SEM micrographs. The study also involved analysis of influence of different micrograph magnification on final surface roughness results. It is shown that, with appropriately calibrated grayscale intensity distributions, optimal agreement with expected Ra value was achieved using indirect profilometric method. The statistical analysis showed that magnification level had no significant influence on obtained results of Ra parameter (based on p value of 0.05). Its influence was more expressed if the point of interest was shifted toward more specific roughness characteristics like peaks and valleys. Overall, the results indicated that proposed indirect image-based profilometry is a useful tool in the characterization of surface’s topographies of flexo and letterpress printing plates.

A tipografia comercial de Caruaru: história de algumas gráficas | Letterpress printing at Caruaru: history of some print shops
Letterpress printing at Caruaru: history of some print shops The city of Caruaru houses a fragment of Brazilian typography history that is not properly registered on books. Laser cutting for letterpress printing: new uses of materials and techniques.
The research into the limitations in the use of the physical medium of letterpress printing details the advantages of how initially working with computerized type layout onscreen can then be transformed to physical printable artworks and blocks, and how materials and methods used with laser cutting has further been used to produce new laser cut acrylic sheet patterns for pantograph traceable routing machinery for traditional wood type production and metal type production by substituting the ‘copper electro deposition process’. An obsolete process, which the museum based Monotype Limited Company in London, England can no longer undertake. The advantage of being able to duplicate rare metal punches is also discussed. The laser cut letterpress further lent itself to the Orwellian overtones that pervaded the House of Flora collaboration, which was heavily influenced by the bleak cityscapes of 1980’s Berlin. The super-chic tailoring was balanced with whimsical fixtures such as laser cut printable sloganeering on accessories within the collection. Medals emblazoned with the slogan ‘Organize, Educate, Agitate’ proclaimed a new era of intellectual fashion. The collection is a reflection of the current climate of instability and fear, of storm clouds brewing. These are clothes for survival, to march in, for revolution.

New Processes in Letterpress Printing: “Cold Type” and the Magnesium Plate
R E CE N T L Y I visited the plant at Ocala, Florida, in which John H. Perry Jr. and Farwell W. Perry are experimen ting with r e v o l utionary changes in the letterpress method of printing newspapers. Last summer the printing and publishing organs carried brief reports that two weekly newspapers--the Leesburg Commercial and the Eustis Lake Region News, both owned by the Perry organization-were being published by a new process. A few weeks later a formal statement was made that the Perrys had teamed up with William J. Higgins, an industrial engineer, to develop the process. The process differs from traditional letterpress printing in three important respects: (I) no body type is set by typesetting machines; (2) no headlines or shop-set ads are set from type, either machine or handset; and (3) printing is not done from lead, but rather from a plate of magnesium, the new lightweight metal derived from sea-water. In addition, the process makes news cuts possible without separate halftone plates. As a substitute for body type, the experimenters first used the VariTyper, an ingenious typewriter-like machine with more than 50 type faces available from one keyboard. When I visited the plant last November, however, they were composing all the straight-matter
