This study was conducted to develop and test the effects of an elder health promotion program and apply strategies for elder health leader training sessions with elders at senior citizen halls.
METHODS
A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were 49 elders at a senior citizen hall (intervention: 27, control: 22). The elder health promotion program consisted of health education and exercise. A professional leader led the program for 4 weeks, and then an elder health leader and research assistant led for 8 weeks (total 12 weeks). Scales for elder health promoting behaviors, perceived health status, life satisfaction and senior citizen hall capability were used and physical fitness levels were measured. Data were collected between April 21 and July 28, 2010 and analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA with SPSS/WIN 12.0.
RESULTS
Health promoting behaviors, physical fitness, perceived health status, and senior citizen hall capacity were significantly better in the experimental group after the intervention compared to the control group.
CONCLUSION
Study findings indicate that elder health promotion programs applying strategies of elder health leader training are effective and can be recommended as nursing interventions for health promotion of these elders. | Education, Medicine | 2012 | 21 | |
2 | Wood age and floral bud distribution on four nashi (Pyrus serotina) cultivars grown on pergola, Y‐frame, and centre‐leader training systems in the Waikato region of New Zealand | Abstract The influence of wood age on floral bud distribution was investigated on the nashi (Pyrus serotina Rehder var. culta Rehder) cultivars ‘Hosui’, ‘Kosui’, ‘Nijisseiki’, and ‘Shinsui’ at 3, 6, and 9 years of age. Comparisons were made between each cultivar grown on either pergola, Y‐frame, or centre‐leader training systems. Floral bud numbers were noted for both spur and lateral sites, and at shoot tips. In all cultivars, most floral buds were produced on young wood. This was especially marked for the lateral‐bearing cultivars ‘Hosui’, ‘Kosui’, and ‘Shinsui’. Bud development on ‘Nijisseiki’ was more evenly distributed over all wood ages, with a significantly higher proportion of spurs. Spur production was lowest in ‘Kosui’. Tree growth was most vigorous on Y‐frame and least vigorous on pergola systems, but training systems did not consistently affect the mix of wood ages or bud development. Despite the recognition by nurses of the importance of supporting their experiential knowledge on scientific data, evidence-based nursing research is seldom integrated in their practice. An important limitation is the nurses' general lack of basic abilities to use research to better inform their clinical decision making. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate a leader training intervention on research results integration in nursing practice.
INTERVENTION
Seven advanced practice nurses and 12 clinical nurses from six care specialties jointly participated to training activities on knowledge transfer and exchange.
METHOD
Nineteen nurses went through a 20-day training internship and 14 participated to two interviews, before and after the intervention.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION
Overall, nurses were very positive about their participation to the training. Difficulties encountered during the internship and the prior negative perception about the research process, were largely offset by the acquired capabilities and the clinical results of the intervention. 6 | PAL Leader Training at Bournemouth University: 12 years on and still evolving | Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) at Bournemouth University (BU) is a peer mentoring scheme that fosters cross-year support between students on the same course. Coordination of PAL, including leader training, is run centrally within Student and Academic Services by the PAL Coordination Team. Successful applicants attend two days of compulsory training in June or September with optional follow up training sessions offered throughout the autumn term. As with other training programmes for peer learning schemes, including Supplemental Instruction (SI), upon which PAL is based (Arendale 1994; Jacobs et al. 2008), the concept of modelling is integral to the training. Trainers employ small group learning techniques and frequently re-direct questions. Leaders can then use these approaches in their own sessions. Crucially, all attendees lead a simulated PAL session. Weekly follow up training is delivered in collaboration with other support staff, providing information on various academic skills, support services and ideas for related PAL sessions. Like PAL itself, leader training has evolved gradually since it began in 2001. Changes include: training on new online community areas on the University's Virtual Learning Environment; streamlining of initial training in response to trainee feedback. However, the overarching principles of the training, established by the founders of the scheme, remain (Capstick et al . 2004). 8 | Enhancing paediatric resuscitation team performance: targeted simulation-based team leader training | Effective team leadership is linked to improved resuscitation outcomes. Previous studies have focused primarily on trainee performance and simulation-based outcomes. We hypothesised that a targeted simulation-based educational intervention for experienced physicians focusing on specific process and communication goals would result in improved performance during actual resuscitations. We conducted an observational pilot study evaluating specific process metrics during clinical resuscitations before and after a 1-hour training intervention for paediatric emergency medicine (PEM) supervising physicians using rapid cycle deliberate practice simulation-based training. Videos of clinical resuscitations from before and after the intervention were retrospectively reviewed to assess time to patient transfer to emergency department stretcher, time to primary assessment and time to team leader summary statement. Between March and July 2018, 21/38 of PEM supervising physicians participated in a training session. After the intervention period, clinical resuscitation teams showed significant improvements in targeted process metrics: transfer of patient within 1 min (79% vs 100%, p=0.03), assessment completed within 3 min (28% vs 75%, p=0.01) and summary statement within 5 min (50% to 85%, p=0.03).
