Enabling team learning when members are prone to contentious communication: The role of team leader coaching
Members of teams are often prone to interpersonal communication patterns that can undermine the team’s capacity to engage in self-learning processes that are critical to team adaptation and performance improvement. We argue that team leader coaching behaviors are critical to ensuring that team discussions that may foster learning new teamwork skills and strategies are unfettered by the tendency of two or more members to exhibit contentious interpersonal communications. We accordingly test a model in which team contentious communication moderates the mediated relationship of team leader coaching behaviors on team innovation effectiveness and team task performance. In a study of 82 work teams, team leader coaching behaviors exhibited indirect, positive relationships with both team innovation effectiveness and team task performance through team learning, but only among teams with an average or higher level of contentious interpersonal communication. We discuss theoretical and practical implications for the leadership of teams.

The Relationships Among Perceived Patients' Safety Culture, Intention to Report Errors, and Leader Coaching Behavior of Nurses in Korea: A Pilot Study
Objectives This study was undertaken to explore the correlations among nurses' perceptions of patient safety culture, their intention to report errors, and leader coaching behaviors. Methods The participants (N = 289) were nurses from 5 Korean hospitals with approximately 300 to 500 beds each. Sociodemographic variables, patient safety culture, intention to report errors, and coaching behavior were measured using self-report instruments. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, the t test, and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results Nurses' perceptions of patient safety culture and their intention to report errors showed significant differences between groups of nurses who rated their leaders as high-performing or low-performing coaches. Perceived coaching behavior showed a significant, positive correlation with patient safety culture and intention to report errors, i.e., as nurses' perceptions of coaching behaviors increased, so did their ratings of patient safety culture and error reporting. Conclusions There is a need in health care settings for coaching by nurse managers to provide quality nursing care and thus improve patient safety. Programs that are systematically developed and implemented to enhance the coaching behaviors of nurse managers are crucial to the improvement of patient safety and nursing care. Moreover, a systematic analysis of the causes of malpractice, as opposed to a focus on the punitive consequences of errors, could increase error reporting and therefore promote a culture in which a higher level of patient safety can thrive.

Executive leader coaching as a strategic activity
This article explores the strategic validity of executive leader coaching. The authors offer the definition of executive coaching and the distinguishing factors of this professional industry and present three primary strategic interventions that executive coaches make in upgrading the performance of leaders, executive teams, and the organization as a whole. Included are the strategies of developing leaders, implementing strategic plans, and the attraction, retention, and development of human talent in the organization. The authors quote leaders in the field of coaching as well as business leaders whom they have coached.

The Impact of Leader Coaching Behavior on Engineers’ Motivation to Learn and Voicing Behavior
Notwithstanding its growth in organizational practice and related literature, few studies have explored the impact of leader coaching behavior.* In addition, team participation and leadership have been emphasized in the engineering and engineering education literature. A two-wave study of 291 engineering firm employees and 58 engineering division leaders participated in this study examining the relationships among perceived leader coaching behavior and engineering employees’ voicing, affective and learning related reactions. In particular factors influencing employees’ perceived ability and willingness to voice opinions and perspectives while participating in day-to-day work activities were examined and found to significantly impact engineering employee reactions. These study results have implications for engineering-related leadership, workplace training, management of workplace quality and productivity, and higher education.

Team leader coaching intervention: An investigation of the impact on team processes and performance within a surgical context.
We examined the impact of a team leader coaching intervention on episodic team processes (transition, action, interpersonal) and subsequent team performance outcomes within a surgical context. Specifically, we tested whether coaching team leaders (i.e., surgeons) on promoting effective teamwork facilitates team processes and two important outcomes-delays and distractions. Team processes were indexed using detailed observational protocols by subject-matter experts before and during surgeries. We employed an interrupted time series design whereby half of our participants received coaching midway through the longitudinal period and the remaining served as a quasi-control group. Team processes and outcomes were collected from multiple surgeries, per surgeon, both before and after the coaching intervention (N = 223 surgeries total). Results from a multilevel mixed-model (treatment vs. control, over time) structural equation model suggest that teams where the surgeon (team leader) received the coaching intervention exhibited higher-quality team transition processes. Transition processes related positively to subsequent action and interpersonal processes, which in turn yielded improvements in two different surgical team performance outcomes. Theoretical and applied implications are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

Role of Peer Coaching in Transmitting the Benefits of Leader Coaching
Drawing on social information processing theory, the present study examines how and when leader coaching can be beneficial for team performance. Based on a sample of 58 teams from a sanitary product company in China, we found that peer coaching served as a mediator linking leader coaching and team performance. Moreover, the team individualistic/collectivism value moderated the first-stage relationship that the relationship between leader coaching and peer coaching was more positive when the team individualism value was low, but not significant when the team individualism value was high; while team task interdependence moderated the second-stage relationship that the relationship between peer coaching and team performance was more positive when the team task interdependence was high, but not significant when it was low. The findings enrich our understandings of the effectiveness of leader coaching behavior by uncovering the theoretical mechanism and boundary conditions. The study also provides important implications for coaching practice in organizations.

The Effect of Patient Safety Culture and Leader Coaching Behaviour Nursing Managers on Patient Safety Incident Reporting at Panembahan Senopati Hospital, Yogyakarta
Every year, millions of patients worldwide suffer from disability, injury, or death due to unsafe medical practices. The Hospital Safety Committee in 2007 reported Patient Safety Incident (PSI) in Yogyakarta is 3rd out of eight provinces. One of the causes of the high PSI is an ineffective PSI reporting system. Patient Safety Culture (PSC) was recommended by the Institute of Medicine to prevent PSI. The presence of lead follow-up in the form of coaching in health affects the development of PSC. This study aims to know the effect of PSC and Leader Coaching Behavior (LCB), nursing managers, on PSI reporting at Panembahan Senopati hospital. This study was a cross-sectional survey design. The sample was 134 nurses who served on the ward with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis used multiple linear regression. This study shows that there is a significant effect of PSC and LCB nursing managers on PSI reporting (R = 0,582; F-count= 88,545; p < 0,05), which is indicated by the t-count of PSC on PSI reporting is 2,110 and t-count of LCB nursing managers on PSI reporting is 11,868 so that there is a significant effect of PSC and LCB nursing managers on PSI reporting.

The Impact of Patient Safety Culture and the Leader Coaching Behavior of Nurses on the Intention to Report Errors: A Cross-Sectional Survey
Background There is growing interest in examining the factors affecting the reporting of errors by nurses. However, little research has been conducted into the effects of perceived patient safety culture and leader coaching behavior of nurses on the intention to report errors. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted amongst 256 nurses in the emergency departments of 18 public and private hospitals in Tabriz, northwest Iran. Participants completed the self- administered questionnaires and the data was analyzed using linear regression analysis. Results Overall, 43% of nurses had an intention to report errors; 50% of respondents reported that their nursing managers demonstrated high levels of coaching. With regard to patient safety culture, areas of strength and weakness were “Teamwork within Units” (PRR = 66.80%) and “Non-punitive response errors” (PRR = 19.66%). Regression findings highlighted a significant association between an intention to report errors and patient safety culture (B=0.123, CI 95%: 0.005 to 0.328, P = 0.026), leader coaching behavior (B=0.172, CI 95%: 0.066 to 0.347, P = 0.004) and nurses’ educational status (B=0. 787, 95% CI: -.064 to 1.638, P = 0.048). Conclusions Further research is needed to assess how interventions addressing patient safety culture and leader coaching behaviors might increase the intention to report errors.
