A charming little Cabernet Effects of wine label design on purchase intent and brand personality
Purpose – The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of brand personality on purchase intent and the influence of three design elements of wine labels on brand personality. Design/methodology/approach – Participants made brand personality judgments and rated their purchase intent for subsets of 90 experimental wine labels, which varied along the dimensions of color, illustration, and design layout. Findings – Brand personality explained nearly half of the variance in purchase intent, with the facets successful, charming, spirited, and up-to-date being most strongly correlated with purchase intent. Of the three dimensions of visual design studied, the illustration used on the label had the greatest impact on both purchase intent and perceptions of brand personality. Research limitations/implications – This study used a proxy to measure purchase intent and studied only a subset of brand personality facets, limiting the generality of findings. Practical implications – This research offers brand managers a potential means of evaluating prospective designs in terms of their likely impact on purchase intent and consumer perceptions of brand personality, and suggests general guidelines for the design of product line extensions from a successful label design. Originality/value – This research helps brand managers and packaging designers to leverage brand personality research and evaluate the effectiveness of new designs.

Considering the impact of medicine label design characteristics on patient safety
Medication errors involving patients receiving the wrong medicines, the wrong dosages or failure to take medicines according to the prescribed schedule are a substantial threat to patient safety. In the medical domain, research evidence on the benefits of improved labelling are piecemeal and often single-product or single-manufacturer driven and often do not inform the more general process of label design. Government and other guidelines on this topic are often low level and non-specific, often failing to give evidence-based guidance. However, there is a wealth of evidence-based research findings in related areas such as food labelling, chemical labelling and more general warnings research, which can provide systematic evidence on the effects of design characteristics such as font size, colour, signal words and linguistic usage on crucial performance variables such as compliance, understandability and discriminability. This research is reviewed and its relevance to medicine labelling is presented.

Wine label design and personality preferences of millennials
Purpose – To better understand the unique preferences of the newest segment of wine consumers, the purpose of this paper is to explore the design and brand personality of wine labels, and their appeal to the millennial market.Design/methodology/approach – The study methodology comprised two components: an experimental design of wine label creations by millennial students of a university beverage management course; and a survey of over 400 millennial consumers to assess wine label design and brand personality preferences.Findings – Wine labels created by millennials tend to be very non‐traditional in terms of the image selected, name of wine, color choice and overall label design. New wine consumers in the 19 to 22 year‐old category are much more likely to select wine based on package features, such as name and image, than based on product features, such as producer and country‐of‐origin. Spirited, up‐to‐date brand personalities appeal to this generation.Originality/value – The millennial market is a large...

The Effects of Varying Electronic Cigarette Warning Label Design Features On Attention, Recall, and Product Perceptions Among Young Adults
ABSTRACT This study was a 3 (Brand: Blu, MarkTen, Vuse) by 3 (Warning Size: 20%, 30%, or 50% of advertisement surface) by 2 (Warning Background: White, Red) experimental investigation of the effects of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) warning label design features. Young adults aged 18–30 years (n = 544) were recruited online, completed demographic and tobacco use history measures, and randomized to view e-cigarette advertisements with warning labels that varied by the experimental conditions. Participants completed a task assessing self-reported visual attention to advertisements with a-priori regions of interest defined around warning labels. Warning message recall and perceived addictiveness of e-cigarettes were assessed post-exposure. Approximately half of participants reported attending to warning labels and reported attention was greater for warnings on red versus white backgrounds. Recall of the warning message content was also greater among those reporting attention to the warning label. Overall, those who viewed warnings on red backgrounds reported lower perceived addictiveness than those who viewed warnings on white backgrounds, and e-cigarette users reported lower perceived addictiveness than non-users. Among e-cigarette users, viewing warnings on white backgrounds produced perceptions more similar to non-users. Greater recall was significantly correlated with greater perceived addictiveness. This study provides some of the first evidence that e-cigarette warning label design features including size and coloring affect self-reported attention and content recall.

Label Design Affects Medication Safety in an Operating Room Crisis: A Controlled Simulation Study
Objective Several factors contribute to medication errors in clinical practice settings, including the design of medication labels. The objective of this study was to quantify the impact of label design on medication safety in a realistic, high-stress clinical situation. Methods Ninety-six anesthesia trainee participants were randomly assigned to either the redesigned or the current label condition. Participants were blinded to the study's focus on medication label design and their assigned label condition. Each participant was the sole anesthesia provider in a simulated operating room scenario involving an unexpected vascular injury. The surgeon asked the participant to administer hetastarch to the simulated patient because of hemodynamic instability. The fluid drawer of the anesthesia cart contained three 500-ml intravenous bags of hetastarch and one 500-ml intravenous bag of lidocaine. We hypothesized that redesigned labels would help participants correctly select hetastarch from the cart. If the participants incorrectly selected lidocaine from the cart, we hypothesized that the redesigned labels would help participants detect the lidocaine before administration. Results The percentage of participants who correctly selected hetastarch from the cart was significantly higher for the redesigned labels than the current labels (63% versus 40%; odds ratio, 2.61 [95% confidence interval, 1.1–6.1]; P = 0.03). Of the participants who incorrectly selected lidocaine from the cart, the percentage who detected the lidocaine before administration did not differ by label condition. Conclusions The redesigned labels helped participants correctly select hetastarch from the cart, thus preventing some potentially catastrophic medication errors from reaching the simulated patient.

The effects of label design characteristics on perceptions of genetically modified food
Objective. To explore the effects on perceptions of labelling food for genetically modified content. Background: there is increasing public pressure for the compulsory labelling of genetically modified food content on all food products, and yet little is known about how the design and content of such food labels will influence product perceptions. The current research draws upon warning label research – a field in which the effect of label design manipulations on perceptions of, and responses to, potential or perceived risks is well documented. Method. Two experiments are reported that investigate how label design features influence the perception of genetically modified foods. The effects of label colour (red, blue and green), wording style (definitive vs. probabilistic and explicit vs. non-explicit) and information source (government agency, consumer group and manufacturer) on hazard perceptions and purchase intentions were measured. Results. Hazard perceptions and purchase intentions were both influenced by label design characteristics in predictable ways. Any reference to genetic modification, even if the label is stating that the product is free of genetically modified ingredients, increased hazard perception, and decreased purchase intentions, relative to a no-label condition. Conclusion. Label design effects generalise from warning label research to influence the perception of genetically modified foods in predictable ways. Application. The design of genetically modified food labels.

Change-to-Open-Label Design. Proposal and discussion of a new design for clinical parallel-group double-masked trials.
The "Change-to-Open-Label Design" (COLA-design) is proposed to overcome some of the ethical and organizational problems of the usual double-masked design in certain situations while preserving its scientific rigor. Patients are randomized on a doubled-masked basis into treatment groups. During the trial the patient or the treating physician may ask for a change from the masked treatment to any open-label treatment of their choice (experimental or not), if the masked treatment is thought to be unsatisfactory. It seems to be easier to obtain a patient's informed consent to participate in placebo controlled double-masked trials especially for long term studies. The main outcome variable in COLA-design is the time until a patient demands for such a change. "Survival analysis" is a powerful statistical method to evaluate this outcome variable. Even patients lost from observation can be included in the evaluation: they still deliver censored outcome values. Evidently, in trials with a COLA-design the patient's personal impression of the therapy is the most important factor in its assessment. Therapeutical success is mingled with undesirable effects into the outcome measure; therefore this design is especially applicable to investigate treatments supposed to increase quality of life.

Identifying Facilitators and Barriers for Patient Safety in a Medicine Label Design System Using Patient Simulation and Interviews
Objectives Medicine label design plays an important role in improving patient safety. This study aimed at identifying facilitators and barriers in a medicine label system to prevent medication errors in clinical use by health care professionals. Methods The study design is qualitative and exploratory, with a convenience sample of 10 nurses and 10 physicians from different acute care specialties working in hospitals in the Capital Region of Denmark. In 2 patient simulation scenarios and a sorting task, the participants selected the medicines from a range of ampules, vials, and infusion bags. After each scenario and in the end of the study, the participants were interviewed. Notes were validated with the participants, and content was analyzed. Results The label design benefited from the standardized construction of the labels, the clear layout and font, and some warning signs. The complexity of the system and some inconsistencies (different meaning of colors) posed challenges, when considered with the actual application context, in which there is little time to get familiar with the design features. Conclusions For optimizing medicine labels and obtaining the full benefit of label design features on patient safety, it is necessary to consider the context in which they are used.

An analysis in metal barcode label design for reference
We employ nondestructive evaluation involving AC field measurement in detecting and identifying metal barcode labels, providing a reference for design. Using the magnetic scalar potential boundary condition at notches in thin-skin field theory and 2D Fourier transform, we introduce an analytical model for the magnetic scalar potential induced by the interaction of a high-frequency inducer with a metal barcode label containing multiple narrow saw-cut notches, and then calculate the magnetic field in the free space above the metal barcode label. With the simulations of the magnetic field, qualitative analysis is given for the effects on detecting and identifying metal barcode labels, which are caused by metal material, notch characteristics, exciting inducer properties, and other factors that can be used in metal barcode label design as reference. Simulation results are in good accordance with experiment results.

Human Factor in Food Label Design to Support Consumer Healthcare and Safety: A Systematic Literature Review
Labels play a strategic role in communication, representing the interface between consumers and the food system. Consumers’ ability to correctly understand product label information was essential for health and safety, making a sustainable choice, as also demonstrated by the Federal Regulations of USA, which define several guidelines to increase the readability of labels. Human Factor studies the interface design in order to assure users’ safety, comfort, and productiveness. So, it could be applied in label design to enhance consumers’ safeguard and healthcare. The aim of this study is to analyze the fields of application of the Human Factor in label design to evaluate the current methods of utilization in the food industry. A two-step literature review was applied, using bibliometric and content analysis. From bibliometric analysis, 6 clusters of themes and the predominance of medical terms arose. The absence of terms related to the food domain is surprising. So, a content analysis on lead papers’ sample related to the Food Industry was carried out to identify evidence about the human factor in food label design. From content analysis, 2 groups of works’ results, focused on the possibility to consider the human factor in: i) pharmaceutical label design, ii) food label design, respectively. The studies in food label design primarily focused on label readability related to content positioning and not on its understandability. The practical implications of the study include the construction of a new concept of label in terms of contents and communication channels.

Led by Busy P -- AKA baseball-capped, head honcho Pedro Winter - Ed Banger Records have risen from low key Parisian rock'n'roll cool to become one of global clubland's most colourful and recognizable music outlets. It could be said they've ascended to maturity yet, in many ways, Ed Banger remains gleefully youthful, holding to the spirit of the party - a stable of DJ-producers with a huge sense of fun and old-fashioned loyalty to each other and their fans criss-crossing the world. The imprint's illustrious history and adventures have been documented in a new photographic book by label designer So Me called 'Travaile. Famille. Party' -- Work. Family. Party. A decade in, Ed Banger shows no sign of slowing down. "I am a happy boy. It's been 10 years of fun, travel, hard work and discovery. I feel lucky too, I met some strong artists, they are Ed Banger records. My main goal is to keep challenging ourselves. We are an alternative label, we are free to go where we want."
