We present GJ, a design that extends the Java programming language with generic types and methods. These are both explained and implemented by translation into the unextended language. The translation closely mimics the way generics are emulated by programmers: it erases all type parameters, maps type variables to their bounds, and inserts casts where needed. Some subtleties of the translation are caused by the handling of overriding.GJ increases expressiveness and safety: code utilizing generic libraries is no longer buried under a plethora of casts, and the corresponding casts inserted by the translation are guaranteed to not fail.GJ is designed to be fully backwards compatible with the current Java language, which simplifies the transition from non-generic to generic programming. In particular, one can retrofit existing library classes with generic interfaces without changing their code.An implementation of GJ has been written in GJ, and is freely available on the web.

Programming in Java can be a daunting task for introductory students, one that is only compounded by the cryptic compiler error messages they see when they first start to write actual code. This article details a project conducted by faculty and advanced students in the creation of an educational tool for Java programming, called Expresso. This paper discusses some existing programming tools, explains their drawbacks, and describes why Expresso is different. We also include a detailed list of typical errors made by novice programmers, used in the construction of the Expresso tool.

The purpose of this study was to examine the factors related to self-efficacy for Java programming among first year engineering students. An instrument assessing Java programming self-efficacy was developed from the computer programming self-efficacy scale of Ramalingam & Wiedenbeck. The instrument was administered at the beginning of the course via Internet with a questionnaire concerning gender, department, computer skills, computer experience, frequency of computer use and family background. Results indicated that self-efficacy of males were stonger than females, 11. 8 % of the variance in self-efficacy was explained by computer experience, the correlation coefficient calculated with the regression factor score of computer skills and self-efficacy scores was statistically significant. In addition siblings use of computers was significant and the mother’s role was critical.

Rapid growth of the volume of interactive questions available to the students of modern E-Learning courses placed the problem of personalized guidance on the agenda of E-Learning researchers. Without proper guidance, students frequently select too simple or too complicated problems and ended either bored or discouraged. This paper explores a specific personalized guidance technology known as adaptive navigation support. We developed JavaGuide, a system, which guides students to appropriate questions in a Java programming course, and investigated the effect of personalized guidance a three-semester long classroom study. The results of this study confirm the educational and motivational effects of adaptive navigation support.

The increase in the numbers enrolling in university computer courses makes huge demands on resources, and maintaining standards of teaching and tutorial support is almost impossible without a massive increase in staff. To overcome this situation, the authors have developed RoboProf, an automated learning environment which, as well as generating and assessing programming exercises, provides ongoing assistance and feedback to students without extra demands on lecturer and tutors' time. This system also contains a technique for detecting plagiarism, an increasing problem in computing courses worldwide. For this research, RoboProf was used to teach Java programming to a class containing nearly 300 students in the first year of a computing degree. Use of the system by students was monitored and recorded on log files in order to investigate the extent to which usage patterns influence achieved programming skill. An analysis shows that students who complete the set of RoboProf exercises perform significantly better than those who do not. The timeliness in which these exercises are completed relative to other students is significant: early solvers get higher marks, and students solving the problems with fewer attempts get higher marks. Not surprisingly, plagiarists achieve a lower score than those who do their own work. Other factors that were found to influence programming performance included entry standards and gender. Entry qualifications impacted positively on performance, and males performed significantly better than females. There was a significant positive correlation between the score achieved in the RoboProf course and the performance in a subsequent computing course administered in the traditional manner.

Recently, the object-oriented programming language Java has been used in many practical systems including enterprise servers, smart phones, and embedded systems, due to its high safety and portability. Thus, a lot of educational institutes have offered Java programming courses to foster Java engineers. In this paper, we propose a Web-based Java Programming Learning Assistant System (JPLAS) using the test-driven development (TDD) method, to enhance educational effects of Java programming by assisting self-studies of students who have studied the basic Java grammar while reducing teacher loads. In JPLAS, a teacher first registers a Java programming assignment with a statement, a model source code, and a test code. Then, a student writes a source code by reading the statement and the test code, such that the source code can be tested automatically at the server by using JUnit, a tool for the TDD method. We confirm the effectiveness of JPLAS through experimental applications to students in our department.

We have developed an agent based intelligent tutoring system for the parameter passing mechanisms in computer science (2), an introductory Java programming language, in Al-Azhar University in Gaza. The agent based intelligent tutoring system helps students better understand parameter passing mechanisms in Java using problem based technique. In this paper, we will describe the architectural design and features of the agent based intelligent tutoring system. An initial evaluation of effectiveness of the system was carried out and the result was found to be positive. The evaluation confirmed the established hypothesis that using the intelligent tutoring system would result in an improvement in the learning of the students [5]-[9].
